Evolving our electricity systems from the bottom up

چکیده

The conceptual framework of the “Smart Grid” naturally takes the viewpoint of the grid, then works down into the details of its individual components. This is good and necessary, but there is an alternative approach that can complement and strengthen the “macrogrid” — to start from (very) small “nanogrids”. Nanogrids can be interconnected and aggregated into microgrids, and ultimately, through the meter, to the macrogrid. Nanogrids are already common today, in the form of USB-powered devices off a PC, Power over Ethernet distribution systems, and the electricity systems in cars and other vehicles. In addition, an increasing number of developing nation households have a nanogrid with local generation and battery storage. This paper defines nanogrids, delves into their existing and potential characteristics, and proposes some principles for standard interfaces between nanogrids and with microgrids.

Finding the Minimum Distance from the National Electricity Grid for the Cost-Effective Use of Diesel Generator-Based Hybrid Renewable Systems in Iran

The electricity economy and its excessive consumption have become one of the main concerns of the Iranian government for many years. This issue, along with recent droughts, shows the need to use renewable energy that is free and clean and does not require water. In addition, due to the high cost of cable-laying and maintenance of power lines, it is not at all an option at all distances over the...

Evolving Physical Self-assembling Systems in Two-Dimensions

Primarily top-down design methodologies have been used to create physical self-assembling systems. As the sophistication of these systems increases, it will be more challenging to deploy top-down design, due to self-assembly being an algorithmically NP-complete problem. Alternatively, we present a nature-inspired approach incorporating evolutionary computing, to couple bottom-up construction (s...

Intelligence in Electricity Networks for Embedding Renewables and Distributed Generation

Over the course of the 20th century, the electrical power systems of industrialized economies have become one of the most complex systems created by mankind. In the same period, electricity made a transition from a novelty, to a convenience, to an advantage, and finally to an absolute necessity. World-wide electricity use has been ever-growing. The electricity infrastructure consists of two hig...

Potentials of Evolving Linear Models in Tracking Control Design for Nonlinear Variable Structure Systems

Evolving models have found applications in many real world systems. In this paper, potentials of the Evolving Linear Models (ELMs) in tracking control design for nonlinear variable structure systems are introduced. At first, an ELM is introduced as a dynamic single input, single output (SISO) linear model whose parameters as well as dynamic orders of input and output signals can change through ...

Maximizing the Adjacent Possible in Automata Chemistries

Automata chemistries are good vehicles for experimentation in open-ended evolution, but they are by necessity complex systems whose low-level properties require careful design. To aid the process of designing automata chemistries, we develop an abstract model that classifies the features of a chemistry from a physical (bottom up) perspective and from a biological (top down) perspective. There a...
